With empty coffers staring it in the face, the Punjab government has decided to rope in NGOs to help it in taking care of 33 old age homes across the state. The only fully government-run old age home is in Hoshiarpur.
Minister of state for social security and development of women and children Razia Sultana told TOI, “There would be dual benefit from engaging NGOs to take care of the old age homes. They would be able to run these homes even when the government is not able to provide funds“ adding “at the same time, since these NGOs have specialization in their field, they would be able to run them in a professional manner.“ The minister said that the department was in the process of finalizing the list of NGOs after verifying their antecedents so that only the genuine organizations were associated with the government.

In terms of the provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, the state government is required to construct and manage old age homes. In the past, there had been complaints about some old age homes not being properly run by the concerned authorities. Even in one of the inspections carried out by Union minister of state for social security and empowerment Vijay Sampla, he had found the government-run Hoshiarpur old age home in deplorable condition.

Accepting the poor financial condition of the department, Sultana said Anganwari members were not getting salaries regularly . Their salaries for the last two months have been released recently , she added.

The minister, who also has the charge of public works department, said that the projects fully funded by the Centre like Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana were being carried out without any problem.“But we are facing problems in those projects which have to be carried out in 60:40 ratio by the Centre and state government,“ she added.
