The fifth National Women’s Ice Hockey Championship concluded at Kazoo Ice Hockey Rink on Sunday with the final match played between J&K Blue team and J&K Red team.
J&K Blue team, comprising of players from SECMOL girls team, won the National Women’s Ice Hockey Championship Cup by scoring four goals against J&K Red team while J&K Red team managed to score only two goals against the winner. J and K Red team, therefore, bagged the runner-up trophy.
The tournament was organised by the Ladakh Winter Sports Club in collaboration with the Ice Hockey Association of India at Leh and five women teams took part in the tournament.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Leh Moses Kunzang was the Chief Guest in the final match while Canadian former women’s ice hockey player, Hayley Wickenheiser, who is widely considered the greatest female ice hockey player in the world, was the Guest of Honour.
Hayley Wickenheiser, had represented Canada at the Winter Olympics five times, capturing four gold and one silver medal and twice being named tournament most valuable player.
While expressing happiness over attention being paid to ice hockey by different associations in Ladakh, Moses Kunzang, who himself is an Ice Hockey enthusiast and a former player, said that he had seen the Ice hockey grow up in Ladakh over the years and the progress of the sport is on the right track. He hoped that a proper ice hockey rink, which is the need of the hour, will soon come up.
Moses Kunzang also thanked Hayley Wickenheiser and the team from Canada to come all the way to witness the match.
Talking to media President Ladakh Winter Sports Club Nima Namgyal Gyapo said that the tournament was being held in association with the Ice Hockey Association of India.
He, however, expressed his dismay over the Jammu and Kashmir Ice Hockey Association for being defunct and therefore not being able to help with the tournament.
He informed that from February 4 to 8 this year, Ladakh Winter Sports Club is organising Genus World Record Ice Hockey in Durbuk wherein 120 participants are expected to take part.
Expressing happiness over the presence of Hayley Wickenheiser on the occasion, General Secretary, Ice Hockey Association of India, Harjinder Singh said that the Indian players will take part in the Canadian Wickenheiser World Female Hockey Festival (WickFest) in October 2018 in Canada. The WickFest is hosted by Hayley Wickenheiser herself.
Harjinder Singh claimed that Indian Ice Hockey has made commendable progress over the years, informed that in October 2018 Indian Ice Hockey players will take part in an Ice Hockey festival in Canada.
