SKUAST- J convened 16th Research Council Meeting, under the chairmanship of Prof Pradeep K. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST Jammu.
Dr Ashok K Saryal, Vice chancellor, Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University and Dr Kusumakar Sharma, Ex ADG ICAR, were the eminent external experts for the research council meeting, which was attended by Director Education, Dr Ganai, Directors from allied departments, Dean FoA, Dr D P Abrol, Dean FVSc Dr M M S Zamma, Dean, FB Sc Dr S A Mallick, Dr Deepak Kher, PPMO, HODs of both the faculties and Incharge research stations.
The Directors from various allied departments viz Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Sericulture, presented feedback to the house on the strategic researchable issues for the Jammu province.
Prof Pradeep K Sharma emphasized to have site specific research for addressing the various challengeable issues faced by the farming community of the region. He advised the University Scientists to have a direct interface with the allied department officers for addressing the yield gap. He directed university Agromet unit to demarcate the intermediate zone of Jammu into various sub zones based on micro climate, elevation, variability in rainfall and temperature. He advised scientists to go for participatory research, varietal improvement programme and to bridge the gap between existing and the potential yield.
Dr Ashok K Saryal, Vice Chancellor HPKV, advised the scientist to work on Basmati 370 and other Basmati varieties so that the farmers can get the potential as well as economic benefit.
Dr Kusumakar Sharma, ADG, put forth his view regarding the potential of animal husbandry in increasing the economical condition of the farmer.
Earlier, Dr J P Sharma, Director Research, presented the research findings and conclusion of various externally and internally funded projects operational at the university.
