Seminar throws light on trends in biotechnology

A two-day national symposium on ‘Recent trends in biotechnology and drug discovery (RTBDD-17)’ concluded at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) today.

The symposium was organised by the Department of Biotechnology, SMVDU, and inaugurated by Sajjad Gani Lone, Minister for Science and Technology, while former Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, RNK Bamezai, was the guest of honour on the occasion.

In his address, Prof Bamezai highlighted the need of bringing research to the common man. He delivered the keynote address on the topic, ‘Metabolic tuners as potential drug targets in cancer– a biotechnological approach to human disease’, and enlightened the participants.

The Vice Chancellor of SMVDU stressed the need of blending biotechnology with ayurveda principles. There were 13 invited lectures by eminent scientists and Ramalinga Swami fellows.

The lectures focused on various aspects of biotechnology, including plant biotechnology, human health, microbial sciences, chemical sciences and drug development.

The symposium also included contributed talks by researchers from different universities which were followed by technical sessions for oral and poster presentations. The valedictory function was presided over by Prof VK Bhat. He congratulated the organising team for the successful completion of the symposium.
